“Heroes” Interactive Website Drawing In Old Fans And New

Website features original graphic novels, episodes, more

November 7, 2007— Websites for every industry, event, and purpose seem to abound these days, which means that whatever your favorite show may be, in all likelihood, there is a website about that show. “Heroes,” NBC’s current network gem, is a sci-fi-lite type of tale about a group of people with extraordinary abilities, who must work to save each other, the ones they love, and ultimately, the world, but what makes this show most notable is its interactive, innovative website.

Show creator Tim Kring, when asked about his hit series, explained his thinking behind it in an interview at the 2007 Comic Con in San Diego held earlier this year. “I wanted to have characters that people related to and the more ordinary (they were) was the way I felt was a more relatable way to tell this. These characters were not things that I was used to writing. I’m used to telling stories about ordinary people with ordinary lives. These are ordinary people whose lives become extraordinary.”

Now in its second season, Kring’s show about “ordinary people whose lives become extraordinary” has fans numbered in the millions, and one of the most popular and most viewed television show-related sites on the Internet. This popularity is due in part to the fact that Heroes.com offers fans more than just cast bios and select old episodes to view. Instead, fan created original graphic novels; websites centered around the character’s fictional interests and even, in the case of the character Noah Bennett, fictional former employers. The UK version of the Heroes.com website offers additional interactive features, including show-based games, trivia, and additional graphic novels.

“I’ve always envisioned the show as being part television show and part comic book,” said Kring. “It has real elements of both, especially the character driven story lines and fast paced action.”

In the forum, website visitors and fans can leave comments, and have, in great numbers, sparked in part, no doubt by the March 12,2007 announcement from the forum host that theories about upcoming episodes, if submitted in the forum, may actually be featured on the show. Viewers are invited to submit their theories in both written and video form for that coveted chance to actually take part in the plot direction of their favorite show.

With people spending more time online daily than ever before, it only makes sense to offer interactive, fan-driven websites for these Internet users to visit and contribute to. It has been reported that approximately 30% of the population, according to a recent poll, use the Internet exclusively for watching videos and television episodes.

Heroes airs Monday nights at 9 pm PST on NBC.
