One in Three Adults Willing to Give Up Sex for More Internet time
New survey sheds light on America’s growing obsession with the Internet
September 21, 2007—A recent survey of 1,011 adult Americans revealed that only 15% of them would be comfortable going without surfing the web for a day or less, while one in three said that in order to have more time available for Internet usage, they would be willing to sacrifice time with friends and even sex.
More than a quarter of the survey respondents said that they spend less time socializing face-to-face with friends. The survey, conducted by tech company JWT, has even resulted in the creation, by JWT, of a new advertising category for people whose lives are so entwined with technology that they cannot be separated from it: digitivity denizens.
“People told us how anxious, isolated, and bored they felt when they are forced offline,” said Ann Mack, director of trendspotting at JWT.
“They felt disconnected from the world, from their friends and family,” she adds.
The popularity of sites like Facebook and MySpace, coupled with the popularity of YouTube and other video sharing sites, as well as blogs, appears to be changing the way that people learn about world events, and, communicate with one another. Many people have whole networks of friends and family members whom they talk to daily online, using email, social networking sites, IM, and other platforms.
Frequent web users are also demanding increased portability, according to the survey, which showed a demand among participants for more devices that allow for on-the-go Internet access, such as Iphones and Blackberries.
“This (the Internet) is how they communicate, entertain, and live,” Mack says. “They (digitivity denizens) see their cell phones as an extension of themselves, and their online and offline lives are co-mingled.”
