Online Video Sharing Sites Get Religion

God Tube Generates Record Amount of Unique Site Visitors, Impressive Rankings

November 1, 2007---In the wake of the phenomenal popularity of video sharing sites, like YouTube.com, GodTube.com has also moved up in the rankings as well, generating more than 4 million unique site visitors in the month of October alone. The site, which has been live since its launch ion August 16th, has been ranked by comScore as the fastest growing site on the web.

What would Jesus watch? While it’s hard to say, but Chris Wyatt, GodTube.com CEO and founder, feels that his site, which hosts only family friendly content, may provide the answer to this question. Wyatt, who started the site as a side project while attending seminary school, never expected, according to the AP, for the site to become as popular as it has.

“It was a major surprise and with a great amount of joy that I have the skill set to do this,” said Wyatt.

Highlights of GodTube.com include a rap parody song entitled “Baby Got Book,” and a video of a 4 year old girl reciting Psalm 23 from memory. Also featured are a video clip of a squirrel singing (presumably with technologically based aide) the song “I Will Always Love You,” and a video discussing the validity of Purgatory. In other video clips, teen youth groups are seen singing and performing skits.

A frequently viewed video, geared at the teenage demographic and entitled “A Letter From Hell,” asks the question: “What if you had a friend who died without knowing Jesus as their personal Savior? What if he or she went to Hell? What if one day you received a letter from beyond? A letter from Hell. A letter from your friend in the flames of eternal torment?”

The video, according to the creators, was not designed as a scare tactic, but rather as “a tool to get people thinking.”

Of course, like anything else, this site is not immune to controversy. Videos with titles like “Why Pentecostalism is not of God,” Mormonism Exposed,” and “The Papacy is NOT Biblical,” have been uploaded, despite the site’s guidelines which state that they are open to various theological viewpoints.

Whatever the controversies surrounding the site may be, it continues to flourish, and the faithful continue to post videos and comments, in such great numbers that the GodTube.com name is expanding to include other products, like a line of software designed to monitor children’s internet video watching and alert parents when an inappropriate site is visited.

Wyatt, 38, attests to the site’s rapid growth, “I thought I was going to be a seminary student and then work maybe a couple hours a week. Now I’m taking online courses because I can’t get over to the seminary, I’m so busy.
