Yahoo Announces Search Engine Overhaul

New features will speed searches, improve results

October 3, 2007--- Yahoo Inc announced this week that enhancements made to its search engine will increase the speed of searches and produce improved, more a

ccurate search results. According to a report from Coputerworld.com, Yahoo’s new Search assist feature includes additional suggested search topics on the main results page, along with a list of correlated concepts designed to help users explore an unfamiliar subject area.

“We did this to avoid a common complaint about assistance technologies on other search engines,” says Tim Mayer, a member of Yahoo’s search development team. “That search engine suggestions are added to the results page whether or not a user wants or needs them.”

For the past few months, according to Mayer, Yahoo has been testing this new Search Assist feature, and has made significant improvements to the original design. A 61% increase in task completion when testers incorporated the Search Assist feature as part of their search was reported.

This announcement comes after a report by Complete Inc, which said that although Google Inc continues to dominate the search engine market, search engine results generated by the Yahoo search engine ultimately lead to more user clicks than searches done on other engines.
